About us

Our mission

We transform lives through the gift of donation.

Gift of Life Alliance brings together two established Texas organ procurement organizations as one team. We honor donors and their families, serve our hospital and transplant partners, and create more opportunities for patients who need a transplant.

Our organizations and names have changed, but our purpose remains the same. Decades of experience, strong community relationships, and a shared commitment to donation now come together as one organization, one team, and one purpose.

Our role

Part of the nationwide donation network.

Gift of Life Alliance is one of two federally designated organ procurement organizations (OPOs) in Texas. OPOs are the vital link between organ donors and patients waiting for life-saving organ transplants.

We work within the nationwide donation network, alongside hospitals and transplant centers, to support donors, care for their families, and help donated organs reach patients in need.

Heritage

A new organization with deep roots.

Gift of Life Alliance was formed by bringing together Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA) and Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA). Both organizations have deep roots in Texas organ donation, with experienced teams, longstanding hospital and community partnerships, and a shared commitment to honoring donors and their families. GOLA builds on their combined experience and carries that dedication forward as one nonprofit organization.

Roots dating to 1974

Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA)

Founded in 1974, Southwest Transplant Alliance began by facilitating kidney recovery for Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. That focused beginning grew into more than five decades of organ and tissue donation work, connecting the generosity of donors with patients waiting for a transplant.

Over those decades, STA developed relationships with hospitals and transplant centers across Texas. Its work expanded beyond coordinating donated organs and tissues to include donor-family support, community education, and collaboration to advance donation and transplantation.

In March 2021, STA announced the opening of its Dallas campus and The Legacy Center. Dedicated organ and tissue recovery spaces, family comfort areas, donor tributes, and a memorial garden brought clinical coordination and compassionate family support together. That investment in donors and families is part of the foundation GOLA carries forward.

Roots dating to 1975

Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA)

TOSA’s history began in San Antonio on December 10, 1975, when South Texas Organ Bank was incorporated as a nonprofit. In 1977, it facilitated its first kidney transplant into a local recipient at Bexar County Hospital, an early milestone in a history of serving Central and South Texas.

In 1992, the Austin-based Central Texas Organ Procurement Program merged with South Texas Organ Bank, expanding its reach into Central Texas. In 1999, the organization adopted the name Texas Organ Sharing Alliance to reflect its broader service area and the partnerships that make donation and transplantation possible.

TOSA continued building that legacy with the opening of the Center for Life in 2020, the Center for Hope in Austin in 2023, and the celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2025. Across five decades, TOSA’s work has included organ recovery, compassionate care, grief support for donor families during the donation process, and public education about donation. This deep experience now helps shape GOLA.

2026: Together as Gift of Life Alliance

Announced on October 1, 2026 following a merger approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Gift of Life Alliance brings experienced donation teams together. The initial transition prioritizes continuity: hospital partners continue to receive dedicated support from existing teams while full integration continues over the coming months.

One team. One purpose. One GOLA.

What is changing as we become GOLA?

Two established organ procurement organizations are coming together under one name, one brand, and one organizational structure. The GOLA identity will appear across communications, facilities, digital channels, and community materials. Some changes happen quickly; others take time. We are committed to clear communication and consistency throughout the transition.

What does this mean for donors and families?
